Superman Review: Superman in James Gunn's satirical world
Three weeks ago Superman intervened in Lex and the USA's interests. After preventing an invasion by Boravia in Jarhanbur, Boravia and the USA became allies, and Lex Luther hired a team to destroy Superman or, more precisely, kill Superman. At the head of the team is Ultraman, who made Superman weak in front of him. Ultraman was created by Luthor and is controlled by drones on the battlefield and a cloud control panel behind it, where ordinary people operate Ultraman like they are playing PlayStation.
Superman became what he is before three years; we will not dig from his beginning like Zack Snyder's Man of Steel. Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan) knows Clark Kent is Superman(David Corenswet), and they become lovers. Also, we see for the first time Krypto in a Superman movie, a white dog. Krypto is something stupid and very playful; Krypto is very powerful and can fly. He is a Superman but a dog, but he can't listen. He is something like Baby Groot in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
Clark Kent (David Corenswet) is a journalist, but as Superman he has principles; he saves animals, and everyone needs help or not. Clark Kent/Superman is like any Superman movie in the last decades. But for the first time, we see a weak Superman who is being beaten up in a normal way and needs the help of others, directly or indirectly. This is considered the first renewal of the Superman character in the history of films, but this will make Superman fans see his new film like Batman in the Dark Knight Trilogy, as this is Superman in James’ world, inspired by the Silver Age.
We also see for the first time Justice Gang, a group of three superheroes: Mr. Terrific, Hawkgril, and Guy Gardner. Is a team that helps Superman. And also journalist Jimmy Olsen has a spy in Luther Corp; Olsen has a big role in the movie.
Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult) is a greedy, ruthless villain who would destroy his city if he killed Superman. Although he is human, his team of superhumans and technology give him unnatural powers. It seems that the Superman movie was not a solo film, but rather there are many characters driving the events, and this created a richness to the film's events.
James Gunn still keeps his essential comedy as it was, but in Superman the comedy will be less than in the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy. Superman's world is sarcastic, goofy, and dramatic; people watch Superman fight a big monster as something in a theatre. Also, the first Lantern, Guy Gardner (Nathan Fillion), is introduced with a bad haircut and comedic punch lines and using bit-part actors. Those are elements we saw in every movie by James Gunn in the last decade, and he is still keeping them in Superman.
James Gunn changed his directing style with action scenes in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3; he started using new techniques in Guardians. It's a style that contains fluid spinning and quick transitions by camera. It's not a new style; it appeared in the Korean movie The Villainess in 2017 and was also used in Aquaman in 2018. This style has its pros and cons; I sometimes feel it's annoying but also very catchy. I would say using this style in future DCUs is a reasonable decision.
The theme of Superman by John Williams from 1978 is used in Superman 2025. Thiswas shocking for me; John Williams's theme fit the movie, especially with the Superman movie atmosphere, but I was searching for a new theme for Superman, like Hans Zimmer's Man of Steel.
Superman 2025 is new fresh air for Superman and the DCU. I don't think that the Superman movie will be the only pillar that will carry the new DC universe, and it is wrong to consider it as such. The Superman movie will certainly be one of the pillars, but there are currently no strong upcoming movies for James Gunn's world. Characters like Batman and Wonder Woman have not yet entered the world, and their movies have not even been written. They are just side characters that appear, but in the upcoming Green Lantern series, John Stewart and old Hal Jordan will be present in James Gunn's world, but that is enough. I think if there were movies for important characters like Batman and Wonder Woman in James Gunn's world, the future would be more stable.
